Some
notes on the day
Left Beeston
at 9.40 in the morning, on a rather tedious journey via Derby,
Crewe and Carlisle to St Bees arriving about 3.40. Stayed at Stonehouse
Farm nearby the railway station and set out to do the first bit
in the evening. Crossed the railway and turned left down Station
Road, eventually reaching the car park and the beach. Did the
traditional things of getting a pebble off the beach and a photograph
at the start and then set off along the cliff. Considering how
rough it had been in recent weeks the weather was quite good,
quite warm, a little bit cloudy and a little hazy sun. The path
climbs steeply up, levels out and there is the option of walking
on paths through fields which is a little easier. Continue along
South Head for about a mile and then the path starts to drop down
to Fleswick Bay. Climb up the other side onto North Head and the
lighthouse. Soon after the lighthouse the path starts to drop
down as Whitehaven comes into view. Continued about a mile past
a small quarry to reach a white bungalow and turn right. Half
a mile along the lane reach a road and turn left and after a further
mile reach Sandwith and turn left again. Very pleasant little
village. Reached the Dog and Partridge which is shut. Carry on
straight ahead at crossroads. Soon becomes a path and then a track
leading up to some houses just before the B road. Turn right along
the B5345 road to St Bees. Spent the evening in the Queen’s
Head and the Manor House Hotel
The clifftop walk was harder work than expected and we learned
afterwards that instead of returning to St Bees along the B road
which was rather busy and unpleasant we should have continued
a little further to follow a track alongside the railway.
